In partnership with Coinbase, Google announces there open-source agent payments protocol (AP2).
The protocol allows AI applications (agents) to send and receive payments on a users behalf, including stablecoins.
AP2 is meant to be interoperable between AI platforms, payment systems, and vendors.
"Our goal is to unlock instantaneous, global commerce, giving agent builders the greatest flexibility".
Additionally, AP2 builds trust by using Mandates—tamper-proof, cryptographically-signed digital contracts that serve as verifiable proof of a user's instructions. These mandates are signed by verifiable credentials (VCs) and act as the foundational evidence for every transaction.
